Filing my first patent: what the process actually taught me
I have a patent application currently pending with the USPTO – filed September 2025, for an AI-driven observability root-cause-analysis system that fuses multi-modal telemetry data with continuous learning capabilities. This is my first time going through the patent process, and I wanted to write about it. What follows is deliberately not a technical breakdown of the invention – while the application is pending and unpublished, the actual mechanics aren’t mine to share publicly yet. What I can talk about is the problem that motivated it, and what the filing process itself taught me.
The problem that started it
Anyone who has been in a “war room” during a major incident knows the feeling: a dozen dashboards open at once, one for metrics, one for logs, another for traces, and a team of engineers trying to manually connect a spike on one graph to a cryptic message on another. Modern systems generate a firehose of telemetry across those three pillars, but the tools that watch them are largely siloed – each one is good at analyzing its own slice of the data, but none of them see the full picture on their own. In a distributed system with hundreds of microservices, that manual correlation stops being merely tedious and becomes close to impossible.
The downstream effect is what most SREs call alert fatigue: a single root cause – a failing database, say – can trigger a storm of secondary alarms across everything downstream of it. Engineers end up flooded with symptoms and have to work backward to find the actual cause, under time pressure, while the system stays degraded. That directly affects Mean Time to Resolution, which directly affects revenue and SLAs. And it’s only getting harder: as architectures shift further into distributed, cloud-native systems, the number of interacting components grows faster than any person’s ability to reason about them by hand. Some of the most expensive, highest-leverage engineers at a company end up spending real time on manual log-diving instead of building anything.
That gap – between how much telemetry we generate and how little of it gets synthesized into an actual answer during an incident – is what the invention is aimed at.
What filing a patent for the first time actually involves
Going in, I assumed the hard part would be describing the invention itself. It wasn’t. The hard part was the prior-art research that has to happen before you can credibly claim anything is novel.
That meant systematically working through the existing landscape – both commercial observability/AIOps platforms and published academic research and patents in the same space – and being honest about where each one already does something similar, so I could pin down exactly what was actually new about the approach rather than just assuming it was. That’s a different skill than building the thing. It’s closer to legal and technical argument than engineering, and I hadn’t done it before.
Once that groundwork was done, the next step was defending it: walking a patent attorney through the invention, the prior art, and why the specific combination of techniques wasn’t obvious or already covered. The application doesn’t move to filing until that review holds up – the attorney has to be convinced the novelty argument is real, not just that the idea sounds impressive. That back-and-forth was, honestly, the most useful part of the whole process: having to articulate why something is inventive, to someone whose job is to poke holes in that claim, forces a level of precision about your own work that day-to-day engineering rarely does.
Where it stands
The application is filed and pending examination. I won’t know the outcome for a while yet – USPTO review timelines are long, and pending applications aren’t even publicly searchable until well after filing. But regardless of how the examination goes, going through the process once has already been worth it: it’s a genuinely different way of thinking about your own work, and I’d recommend the exercise to any engineer who thinks they might have something worth protecting.
